First Days

So we arrived at our house at about 4:00 on Sunday afternoon, soon after we began to unpack and start to call it home, it then started to rain on and off for the rest of the night. The next day we got up at about 5:45 am to get ready and leave for a river boat tour that would take us to the ancient Mayan city of Lamanai. We took about an hour boat ride that ended with us having a lunch before we took off on a hike for the temples.

The hike to the temples was remarkable, I felt like an ant under all the giant trees with branches longer than cars! Not to mention monkeys just swinging on branches above us! But to see where ancient humans lived thousands of years ago just seems so interesting to me! After we climbed a few temples and visited the gift shops we got back on the boat and went down the New river (the name of the river is New, kind of confusing right?) The next day we decided to go to the capital city, Belmopan, it holds most of the government buildings, along with embassies for a few countries. After walking around the city for a while and taking some pictures we met with Marco who runs an alternative energy company that does solar, wind, and hydro power energy. To see other people doing alternative energy, even in a developing country shows how creative the people of Belize are in trying to solve their problems. I hope in the next few days I will see more examples of this that I can describe to all of you!
