Nathan H. - Belmopan

Today was not as hectic and intense as yesterday but it was still exciting. We were able to visit the Kindred Spirits Campus which was a few miles outside of the Belize capital Belmopan. The other students from MVNU are staying there. While there, we had a little bit of downtime so we got to play a couple rounds of euchre and that was fun. We also also got to have lunch with the other students which was nice because we won't see them for most of the rest of the trip.

Before lunch, we were able to listen to Dwight Tillett speak to us about his experience and life in Belize. He grew up in Belize and then went to the US to earn his degrees. He then came back to Belize to use the wealth of knowledge that he had gained for the betterment of his home country and its people through the government and education systems. Dwight was very informative and he was able to give us a better grasp on the Belizean culture and its people. He had some truly amazing stories and personal experiences.

After lunch, we sat down with Doug Karl who is a retired electrical engineer and is attending the trip with us. He explained the two main types of solar panel systems and how they worked and then we discussed the system we would be using and the different options or methods of how to do it.

Afterwards, we traveled to Belmopan and met with a gentleman that owned a solar installation company and we talked to him about the different types of systems that he installs and how he does it. It was good to talk to someone who has worked with the power grid in Belize before because it can often times be unstable which could affect the electronics that convert the solar panel power from DC to AC.

Tomorrow we are heading to Spanish Lookout to visit some hardware stores to find certain electrical supplies that we will need to install the systems. We are also going to visit the aluminum shop to draw up some brackets that we will be mounting the panels to the roof with. It should be interesting and I look forward to it!
